Fernandina Beach sneaks up on you. One minute you’re chasing postcard sunsets, the next you’re elbow-deep in smoked fish dip at the Salty Pelican, wondering why every coastal town doesn’t get this right.

The list below runs from salt-rock-finished tenderloins at Salt to the gloriously greasy pickled okra piled on a fish sandwich at Kitchen 251, plus a stop for coffee rum at Marlin & Barrel. I ate my way through all of it, so you don’t have to guess.

Here’s where to point your fork.

Great waterfront views and vibes
Smoked fish dip standout
Gator bites worth ordering
Gluten-free Reeses pie surprise
Upstairs and downstairs sports bars

The Salty Pelican nails the waterfront vibe without trying too hard. Upstairs or down, every seat gets a view, and the breeze does half the work. I ordered the smoked fish dip on a whim, and it arrived creamy, smoky, and begging for more crackers. The gator bites? Surprisingly tender, with a kick that lingers nicely. Save room for the gluten-free Reeses pie, which tastes like a candy bar melted into heaven. It's a casual spot, so don't expect white gloves. But for cold drinks, salty air, and solid bar food, this is where I'd start and end a beach day. Bring sunscreen; you'll want to stay.

Wicked Bao is a tiny place with a big heart. The hostess greeted me like an old friend, and the whole team moved with precision, getting food out fast even when every table filled. The owner actually stopped by each table, which says a lot. My pork dumplings were juicy, with a crispy bottom that gave way to rich filling. The ramen came steaming, broth deep and savory, noodles with the right chew. And the mochi? Soft, sweet, and a perfect finish. Nothing fancy, just honest, flavorful cooking. I left full, happy, and already planning my next visit. For a quick, satisfying meal in Fernandina, this is the spot.

Cafe Karibo surprised me in the best way. The veggie wrap came packed with fresh crunch and a tangy sauce that made me forget it had no meat. The Greek quesadilla was divine, loaded with feta, olives, and a hint of oregano. Sweet potato fries arrived crispy, not soggy, with a sprinkle of salt that made them disappear. The three-layer chocolate ganache cake? Dense, rich, and worth every calorie. The family running it made me feel like a regular on my first visit. It's cozy, unpretentious, and full of flavor. If you're craving something fresh and homemade, this is your place.

Highlights
Authentic Spanish boquerones
Excellent, generous paella
Great Estrella beer selection
Inconsistent food temperature
Overly salty chicken dish

España Restaurant & Tapas brings Spain to Fernandina with flair. The boquerones were authentic, briny and bright, a true taste of the coast. The paella arrived generous, loaded with seafood and saffron, though the rice could've used a touch more socarrat. The Estrella selection is solid, cold and crisp. But the chicken dish came out lukewarm, and the salt level overwhelmed everything else on the plate. Service was friendly, but the inconsistency kept me from fully loving it. Still, the good bites were very good. Come for the tapas, order carefully, and you'll have a decent evening.

Unforgettable key lime soufflé

Salt is where fine dining meets ocean views, and it delivers. The tenderloin, finished on a salt rock, arrived perfectly medium-rare with a crust that popped. Every plate looked like art, composed with care, and tasted even better. Our server Matt was exceptional, attentive without hovering, and knew the menu inside out. The key lime soufflé was unforgettable, airy, tart, and sweet all at once. It's pricey, no doubt, but worth it for a special occasion. The setting is elegant, and the view stretches forever. If you want a meal that feels like an event, book Salt and let them take care of you.

Attentive, knowledgeable service

Fine dining worth planning

Burlingame is a reservation-only gem, and now I know why. The brussel sprout starter was the star, charred and nutty with a glaze that made me scrape the bowl. Snapper and scallops both arrived perfectly cooked, flaky and tender, with sauces that complemented rather than covered. The staff knew their stuff, explaining each dish with genuine enthusiasm. It's intimate, quiet, and a little formal, but not stuffy. I left impressed and already planning a return trip. Just remember to book ahead, because this place fills up fast. For a refined dinner that's worth planning around, Burlingame is the answer.

Born-here local approved spot
Service remembers every order
Calamari and mains delighted
Live entertainment adds charm
Worth returning for spring break

The Boat House earns its local approval. Everyone seemed to know someone, and our server remembered our order without writing it down, a small miracle. The calamari was light, crisp, and not rubbery, which is rarer than you'd think. My mains were solid, fresh and well-seasoned, though nothing blew my mind. The live entertainment added a nice touch, mellow tunes that fit the maritime vibe. It's not fancy, but it's dependable and welcoming. I'd happily return with out-of-town guests for a relaxed dinner. For a true sense of Fernandina, this place delivers. Just come hungry and stay for the music.

Kitchen 251 looks like a fish shack from the outside, but inside it's pure gold. The decor is unassuming, simple tables and a counter, but the food is anything but. Stone crab legs came fresh and sweet, cracked open for easy eating. The fried fish sandwich was huge, crispy, and topped with pickled okra that added a bright, tangy crunch. Sides were great too, especially the mac and cheese and hush puppies. The staff treated me like family, and the wait was worth it. I'll be back, no question. This is the kind of place that reminds you why you love coastal eating.

David's Restaurant & Lounge surprised me with its ambition. The tasting menu rivaled big-city spots, each plate a carefully composed bite. The chef came out personally to explain each dish, and his passion was contagious. Wine pairings were spot-on, enhancing every course. They even added a small touch for a birthday at the next table, a thoughtful gesture. For the quality, the price felt almost too fair. It's a quieter, more intimate experience, so dress up and slow down. If you want a memorable evening without pretension, David's is a find. I'm already telling everyone I know.

Bar Zin is a cozy spot that punches above its weight. The bang bang shrimp appetizer was creamy, spicy, and addictive, gone in minutes. Short ribs came out fork-tender, falling apart with a rich, glossy sauce. The jalapeno margarita had a nice kick, balanced by lime and salt. Service was attentive and helpful, guiding me through the menu. The beignets for dessert? Pillowy, dusted with sugar, and worth every bite. It's casual but polished, a good middle ground. I'd come back just for those short ribs. A solid choice for a relaxed night out in town.

Marlin & Barrel Distillery feels like a secret worth sharing. The master distiller clearly knows his craft, walking me through every spirit with patience and zero pretension. I tried everything on the menu, and the smoked standout was a revelation, peaty but smooth. The Vanilla Bean espresso shot surprised me, creamy with a real coffee punch. But the star? The strong coffee rum, which I could sip neat or splash into anything. The space itself is rustic and warm, with a bar that invites conversation. It's not a full restaurant, so come for the drinks and stay for the stories. I'll be back for that rum.

The Happy Tomato is the lunch spot I'll dream about. The patio welcomes dogs, which instantly won me over, and the service was fast without feeling rushed. My chicken platter arrived juicy, seasoned perfectly, with a smoky char that made me slow down. The pulled pork was just as good, tender enough to fall apart at a glance. And the potato salad? Best I've had in years, creamy with a hint of mustard. The vibe is relaxed, unhurried, exactly what a coastal town should offer. Bring your pup, grab a seat outside, and let the afternoon melt away. This place gets it right.
